Help launch the Mobile Ripple Station™
Concept rendering of a Mobile Ripple Station™ activation
THE FIRST COMMUNITY BELIEVED IN THE IDEA. NOW THE EXPERIMENT CAN BEGIN
For almost a year, a little wooden box outside my home has invited people to notice someone: choose a hand-painted token, personalize it, and give it away. Nearly 1,000 tokens left that Station, carried into exchanges I may never witness.
I began wondering: could the invitation travel? And could generosity become contagious?
I proposed a Mobile Ripple Station™—a traveling public installation that could bring this practice to farmers’ markets, community events, and places where people who might never pass my driveway could encounter it. But it wasn’t simply to carry the practice farther … it was to allow each community to help make what the next one would receive.
More than 90 members of Generalist World voted anonymously among sixteen community-led proposals. The Mobile Ripple Station™ was one of four selected to receive a £500 Greenhouse seed grant, which funded the machine itself.
Now I’m raising $1,250 to design and lead its first public activation—including the reusable signage, participant materials, documentation, and experience design needed to steward that first transfer from one community to another.
How it works
People gather around a shared table to make a collaborative abstract piece of art, knowing that what they create will leave the room and travel to people they may never meet.
A community makes together
The collaborative artwork is turned into individual tokens—finished, labeled, and prepared to enter circulation through the Mobile RIPPLE Station™.
The artwork becomes tokens
The Station brings those tokens into another community, where someone can choose one, personalize it, and offer it to a barista, Uber driver, receptionist, server, or anyone who goes routinely unnoticed.
The Station carries them somewhere new
The Station does not simply move from place to place; each community helps create what the next one receives.
What happened when the practice entered a shared space
On August 23, 2026, approximately 60 people gathered outside Sweet Shop to paint a collaborative work of art that became tokens for the shop’s new Ripple Station™.
The most meaningful evidence came from the people around the table. Sandra, the shop manager, had asked for a Station after receiving one token herself. Ruchika immediately imagined giving hers to a restaurant worker whose effort often goes unnoticed. Liz described each token as “a glimmer of what they mean to someone else”—something they might eventually pass forward.
Their words showed me that the practice could be understood, carried, and continued by people beyond me.
What $1,250 makes possible
$625 — Artist-led activation
The planning, preparation, on-site making, two hours of live facilitation, and documentation that allow me to hold the experience from beginning to end.
$300 — Reusable signage and participant guidance
Weather-resistant signage, clear instructions for participating, tabletop signs, and printed materials that can travel with the Mobile RIPPLE Station™ to future activations
$240 — Tokens, art materials, and photographs
Paper, paint and collage materials, labels, envelopes, stickers, coins, Instax film, and everything needed to turn the shared artwork into finished tokens during the activation.
$85 — Transportation, setup and contingency
Transporting the Station and materials, setting up and breaking down the space, and a small allowance for the unpredictable parts of taking a new installation into public.
This funds the first activation—and creates the reusable foundation the Mobile RIPPLE Station™ will carry into the ones that follow.
What you are making possible
The tokens themselves—and the exchanges they carry—will remain unbranded.
If you would like to be recognized as the sponsor who made the activation possible, I would be glad to include your name or organization on the table signage. You may also choose to remain anonymous.
Either way, what your support sets in motion is a chain of recognition: a community makes together, the artwork becomes tokens, and those tokens travel toward people who might otherwise go unnoticed.
MAKE AN IMPACT TODAYHELP SET THE FIRST RIPPLE IN MOTION
This is a one-time invitation to help fund one complete Mobile Ripple Station™ activation.
Once the $1,250 has been fully committed, I will close this fund. I’ll follow up personally with everyone who contributes and share where the Station goes—and what happens there.
The activation has its first supporter. With gratitude to Practical & Co for helping set it in motion.
