Token Tales — Reflections on invisibility, presence, kindness, and what it means to be noticed through small handmade notes.
Alfredo has been the crossing guard near my daughter's school for the last five years. He has a mop of white hair and roots that run through Italy, South America, and a few other corners of Europe. He greets every single kid by name … and not just the name. He remembers what they play, what they love, and he checks in on them every single day.
We met him the first week of school. On my way back, I stopped to talk to him. He told me he used to be an architect.
By the second day, he already knew my daughter’s name. By the third, she'd made him a token of thanks for remembering everyone's — hers included.
That was the beginning.
Over the course of the school year, Alfredo became someone we knew in pieces, and who knew us in pieces back. He brought in an old photo album one day — his mom, his dad, a girlfriend who looked like Sophia Loren, his former wife, his daughter, and his granddaughter, whom he raised alongside her single mom. He showed me a photo of her at four, by a swimming pool. She's in college now.
He found out I was an artist and started asking about my work.
There was a stretch when I stopped walking my daughter and started driving instead — an ER visit had had me sidelined. Alfredo noticed. He worried, seeing me in the car instead of on the sidewalk, waving every day at us … and then he made sure to walkup to the car at the STOP sign and ask if I was ok.
And then there's our dog. Alfredo greets everyone he meets — my daughter, me, every child at that crossing — by their exact name. Except Ollie. For reasons none of us could figure out, "Ollie" never stuck for him. "ILO" did. We corrected him twice, gave up, and now our dog has a second name that only exists because one man at a crosswalk decided that's what it was.
A crossing guard is such a small, routine part of a school morning — a person you see for ten seconds and forget by the time you park. Alfredo never let that happen. And I am grateful for that.
